Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are rising in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), driven mainly by cardiometabolic disease (CMD), including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension
NIHR Global Health Research Group on collaborative care for cardiometabolic disease in Africa: CREATE, a feasibility study- ON-GOING
DID YOU KNOW…
1. 60-90% of cases of diabetes are due to obesity
2. 80 - 90% of all Type 2 diabetes is due to unhealthy lifestyles
3. Healthier living can reduce the risk of diabetes by 40-60%
4. Around 73% of adults with high blood pressure across Africa do not know they have it.
5. High blood pressure may have no symptoms.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
- Any physical activity is better than none.
- But more is better, especially when combined with a reduction in sitting time.
- An increase of as few as 500 steps/day is associated with a 2%–9% decreased risk of cardiovascular morbidity.
- One 5–6-min brisk-intensity walk/day (~500 steps in 5 min) equates to ~4-year greater life expectancy.
- Regular Physical Activity (PA) can facilitate the prevention and management of more than 35 chronic conditions and diseases, including type 2 diabetes.
WHICH DIET IS THE BEST
- Dietary adherence predicts outcome rather than dietary strategy…
- All diets work, but unless adhered to long-term, by 12 months, any weight loss will return and any cardiovascular risk reduction gained will have largely disappeared.
BENEFITS OF WEIGHT LOSS (5-10% loss)
- Reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes
- Reduction in cardiovascular risk factors
- Improvement in blood lipid profile
- Improvement in blood pressure
- Improvement in health-related quality of life
Diabetes
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterised by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to severe damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. The most common is type 2 diabetes, usually in adults, which occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t make enough insulin.
What are the symptoms of Diabetes
- No symptoms (asymptomatic initial stages)
- Urinating a lot
- Very thirsty despite drinking lots of water
Benefits of being physically active:
-
- Lowers Blood Pressure
- Sustains healthy weight
- Increases muscle strength
- Strengthens bones
- Increases energy
- Improves mood
- Improves sleep
- Reduces stress
5 S’S – 5 MOST IMPORTANT HEALTHY BEHAVIOURS
- Sitting: Try not to sit for longer than 30 minutes without getting up and having a walk.
- Stepping: 5-6 minutes of fast walking each day, could help you live 4 years longer.
- Sleep: Try to have 6-8 hours of sleep per night
- Sweating: Try to be moderately active (activity that makes you sweat) for 150 minutes per week or very active for 75 minutes per week.
- Strengthening: Resistance exercise that uses a persons body weight to pull or push, at least twice a week.
FACTS
- Cardiovascular diseases(CVD), diabetes mellitus, and hypertension are the three most common non-communicable diseases(NCD) globally. Over 75% of global CVD deaths occur in low-to-middle income countries (LMICs) and CVD is the leading cause of NCD death in Subsaharan Africa(SSA). Similarly, 80% of the 463 million people living with diabetes worldwide live in LMICs

- High blood pressure can be caused by
- Unhealthy diets (for example, too much salt, fat and sugar and too little fruits and vegetables)
- Being overweight or obese and drinking too much alcohol.
-
- Being inactive and sitting too much
- A family history of high blood pressure
- Young people may develop high blood pressure.
- Having diseases such as diabetes or kidney disease

- losing weight,
- eating less salt and more fruit and vegetables,
- being more active and
